The city of Albury lies on the banks of the mighty Murray River in the south of New South Wales. It is at the center of a huge agricultural region and is also an important stopover for Hume Highway traffic travelling between Melbourne and Sydney. The city itself is full of historical reminders of Australia’s early days and there are many superb examples of the countries early architecture in the heritage buildings like churches, the restored Albury railway station, museums, cathedrals and art gallerys. The Murray River forms the state boundary here between Victoria and New South Wales and Albury’s sister city of Wodonga lies just over the border. Albury is easy to get to. There is a fully divided highway all the way to Melbourne with regular coach services. There is also a busy airport and Qantaslink flights come in and out on a regular basis. The city has a busy CBD as well as plenty of suburban shopping malls and the like. Accommodation in Albury is also readily available and there is a wide choice of quality motel and hotel style accommodation available to choose from.

Locals use the Murray River for their recreation with water sports like waterskiing and canoeing being very popular. The fishing is also great with Murray Cod on the menu. Paddle steamers ply the river and you can book on for a day or cruise the river for a week in total luxury. To the west are the unique country towns of Yackendanda and Beechworth, which are both steeped in the early history of the nation. Albury, Woodonga is also a great jumping off point for the Victorian snowfields and alpine regions. Many skiers fly into Albury and then hire a car for the drive out Falls Creek and Mt Hotham. This drive takes you through magnificent country regions like Bright and Mt Beauty which are among the most beautiful alpine regions in the country. Mt Buffalo is also close by and should not be missed with its spectacular rock formations and magnificent forests and bushwalks.
